2014-12-03 Day 46 Flame and Shadows2It could have been here. Imagine such a thing happening at any lakefront,at any major American city on the evening of 4 July.  But it happened in Nice, France – mayhem and murder as people waited for the fireworks show for Bastille Day.

The death count rises with nearly every new news report.  Words fail. I had lunch today had a French café here in a local town. As I drove home I realized I had forgotten to tell the French owner and chef to have a happy Bastille day. I plan to call him back when I got home; but when I got home I heard the news.

I called him back telling him I wanted to wish him a good Bastille Day, but that I couldn’t now. He sounded confused and thanked me for calling him to tell him that but then I told him the other news which he obviously haven’t heard yet.

There is a shocked silence, and then an intake of breath.  He said he would have to check the news online. I told him how sorry I was that his country had suffered another such terrible attack.  How insufficient words are!
