Party Like It’s 1968?

wethepeople_editI’ve lived in the South, though not in the state of Misery Missouri.  I’ve seen black people treated like cattle and gotten in trouble for not going blithely along with it.  And those memories of the South, in the mid to late 1960’s are why I would never agree to live there again.

So watching Ferguson, Missouri convulse with murderous racism and so forth this week has been deeply disturbing.  I’ve had recurring nightmares of a sort not seen in my life since 1965!  So, I can scarcely imagine what it must be like to be LIVING there or being a reporter there.

Teargas, not just for protestors now?  But for international reporters seeing what they shouldn’t see, photographing what Missouri wants to hide under their home-woven racist rugs?   And they basically consider reporters from outside to be invaders of some sort, not allowed to record what they see?  And sure, it is all “outside agitators“…..could never be homegrown yokel sorts of asshattery to blame.  Americans in Ferguson are free, alright, free to run from cops or obey. So, I will stick with this “quote of the day,” thanks.

And, et tu, St. Louis?

A FB friend described this early on as a “pigfuck” and that remains the best description I’ve seen so far. Today’s NYTimes points out that over the last decade the Federal gubmint has encouraged local police forces to militarize themselves to the max, providing grant funds and/or weapons with few restrictions ore requirements w/r/t training and safety. The impetus, of course, was to combat terrorism, but just like the chaos caused by the TSA, it has gone horribly wrong, totally wasteful, and entirely ineffective.

    • Pretty much. Now, I have seen a pretty militarized police force that did not act like goons — in the 1970’s in the walled city of Berlin, Germany. The Germans were allowed no Army there. But the police carried Uzis and there were a lot of them. But they HAD an actual enemy — the Russians right across the wall. They never treated their populace like the cops in Ferguson did.

. . . and I thought they were supposed to love company? Oh, thats Misery.

But seriously, is this country fucked or what?
