…apologies to Bonnie, but it isn’t love counted on these beads. Every New Moon I check the totals on the death counts from Afghanistan, I add them to the total from Iraq, from Bengazi, from the Ft. Hood murders, and from the mob storming of the UN compound in Mazar e Sharif. This time, it totaled a count of 8,200. So there…every bright bit of blue, a pair of eyes that is closed —every tenth bead a ray of golden sunshine that is missing a head to fall upon. Every hazel, brown, and green…a sparkle of life fled forever in service of goals uncertain and victories elusive and temporary.
